How to add a profile card overlay in DaVinci Resolve

Updated 2026 · 3 min read · DaVinci Resolve, Overlays, Tutorial

DaVinci Resolve is a powerhouse for color and editing, but its Fusion and Edit pages aren't the quickest place to design a social profile graphic. The simplest way to add a profile card overlay is to import a transparent PNG and drop it on the timeline.

Whether you're on the free version or Studio, the process is the same and takes about a minute.

Step-by-step in DaVinci Resolve

  1. Generate a profile card as a transparent PNG with Carddrop — paste the URL or the copied profile text and photo.
  2. In Resolve, go to the Media page and import the PNG, or drag it straight into the Media Pool on the Edit page.
  3. Drag the card onto a video track above your main clip.
  4. Open the Inspector to set Zoom (scale) and Position.
  5. Add a Dynamic Zoom or keyframe the Opacity for a smooth fade in.

Tip: Because the PNG has an alpha channel, Resolve composites it over your footage automatically — no need to add an alpha output node in Fusion or pull a key.

Keep it sharp

Resolve timelines are often 4K, so import a high-resolution card. Carddrop exports at 4x scale, which gives you room to position and scale the overlay without softening the text or avatar.

Matching your color grade

Since Resolve is a color tool, you probably care about the card fitting your grade. Set the card's style and background color in Carddrop before exporting so the overlay sits naturally in the frame rather than clashing with your look.

FAQ

Does this work in the free version of DaVinci Resolve?

Yes. Importing and overlaying a transparent PNG works identically in the free version and Studio.

Do I need to use Fusion?

No. For a simple profile card overlay you can stay entirely on the Edit page. Fusion is only needed for more complex motion graphics.

Why is my PNG showing a black or white background?

That usually means it was exported as JPG or without an alpha channel. Export as PNG with a transparent background and Resolve will read the alpha correctly.
